To commemorate the 800th anniversary of St. Francis’s death, Pope Leo XIV has proclaimed that from January 10, 2026, to January 10, 2027, Catholics will celebrate a Franciscan Jubilee Year. The faithful have been granted the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence, provided that all conditions are met.
This celebration builds on the spirit of the Ordinary Jubilee of 2025, when the faithful were called to be pilgrims of hope. In 2026, the Church invites Christians to renewed joy and holiness, commemorating Saint Francis’ passing from this life to heavenly glory on 3 October 1226. Through this year, the Church hopes to reignite hearts with humility, peace, and evangelical zeal.
Saint Francis reminds us that holiness and love are not only found in grand gestures but also in the small, everyday acts of kindness. Caring for neighbors, offering compassion, and striving for harmony with others are all ways of living his message. This Jubilee calls every Christian to carry forward his legacy of peace and service, making the love of Christ visible in the world today.

Pope Leo XIV provided this prayer to be said often this year.
Saint Francis, our brother, you who eight hundred years ago
went to meet Sister Death as a man at peace,
intercede for us before the Lord.
You recognized true peace in the Crucifix of San Damiano,
teach us to seek in Him the source of all reconciliation
that breaks down every wall.
You who, unarmed, crossed the lines of war
and misunderstanding,
give us the courage to build bridges
where the world raises up boundaries.
In this time afflicted by conflict and division,
intercede for us so that we may become peacemakers:
unarmed and disarming witnesses of the peace that comes from Christ.
The faithful in the Diocese of Salt Lake City are invited to the Franciscan Jubilee Year celebration with a local pilgrimage. Bishop Oscar A. Solis has designated Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Orem “as an official pilgrim Church for this special Year of Grace,” according to a memo Feb. 13 addressed to the faithful in Utah.
