Sunday, November 9 at the 9:00 a.m. Mass we will celebrate with the OCIA inquirers the Rite for Entrance into the Catechumenate and of Welcoming the Candidates.
This combined rite is used to receive catechumens preparing for Initiation and to welcome baptized candidates preparing to complete their Christian Initiation. This is the first formal step for the unbaptized as they express their will in public to become catechumens. In the Rite of Entrance, a change of identity takes place: those previously known as inquirers become catechumens. This rite is “the first consecration by the Church” of those seeking Christian initiation. They are literally marked with the cross of Christ as God’s own. Please make them feel welcome and pray for them.
Why are Catechumens dismissed after the Homily?
There are two dismissals in the Sunday Liturgy. The one most familiar is the dismissal of the faithful at the end of Mass. The other is the dismissal of the catechumens (unbaptized adults) at the end of the Liturgy of the Word. The dismissal of the faithful at the end of Mass is not a type of “goodbye.” Mass prepares us to be dismissed as apostles to the world. The catechumens are being dismissed after the Liturgy of the Word to prepare them for the time when they can be dismissed to do the work of the faithful. They reflect more deeply on what they have just experienced.
